28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Life Application New Testament Commentary Jesus Promises Rest for the Soul / 11:20–30 / 71

Pharisees had placed so many rules and regulations on the people that religion had become like “labor,” and a life of devotion to the Law had become a burden to carry (see 23:1–4). But Jesus invited the “little ones,” true disciples with eyes open to see the truth, to come to him and find rest from these labors. Jesus was clearly admonishing them to abandon Pharisaic legalism and join him. Those who follow Christ will find refreshment in their renewed relationship with him, freedom from guilt over sin, deliverance from fear and despair, and the promise of continued help and guidance from the Holy Spirit

The invitation is stated in a twofold manner: Jesus invites people (1) to come to him (cf. 4:19; 22:4) and (2) to take his yoke upon them and learn from him. Both invitations are followed by promises of rest (an allusion to Jer 6:16), and there is additional incentive provided in the description of Jesus’ yoke and burden in 11:30

What
What do we seek after if it isn’t rest. Why do men spend their lives seeking after wealth if it isn’t for rest?
Matthew 11:25–30 NKJV
At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

After criticizing the unbelieving Jews, Jesus thanks the Father for His believing disciples (v. 25). He contrasts the burdensome teaching of the Pharisees by telling His disciples that His burden is light (v. 30), inviting them to full discipleship (vv. 28–29).

Pleasure God gives us all things to enjoy but if God is not in it there is no rest.
